Assessments
We
are experienced in advising
our clients about most Civil Engineering issues involved with land and
property development from pre-acquisition, through design,
construction, routine maintenance, improvements and change of use.
Our core technical skills and expertise in soil mechanics, traffic and
highway engineering, hydraulics and structural engineering are used to
provide an assortment of design services such as those below.
Services Include:
- Transportation
Assessments
- Capacity
calculations for highway links and junctions
- The
design of new private and public highways (S38
agreements)
- The
design of Highway alterations and improvements (S278
agreements)
- Swept
path analysis
- Flood
Risk Assessments and drainage strategies
- Watercourse
flow and capacity calculations – the
design of river diversions, ponds and other water features, culverts,
headwalls, grilles and screens.
- The
hydraulic assessment of existing Sewer and drainage
networks.
- The
development of drainage strategies.
- The
design of new private drains and adoptable public
sewers and pumping stations (S104 agreements).
- Sewage
and process water treatment works and other water
retaining structures.
- Sustainable
Urban Drainage Techniques (SUDS)
- Digital
ground modelling is used to determine optimum
development levels.
- The
selection of soil improvement techniques such as:
- Lime
or Cement modification
- Vertical
drains and soil surcharging to accelerate
settlement
- Dynamic
Compaction
- Vibro
Compaction
- Reinforced
Concrete and sheet pile retaining walls
- Gabion,
modular concrete and reinforced earth retaining
walls.
- Earthworks
and slope stability
- Economic
design of flexible and rigid pavements including
for very light and very heavy imposed loads as well as those from
normal Highway vehicles and aircraft.
- Pavement
design over very poor subgrades.
- To
comply with our statutory obligations under the CDM
regulations we routinely carry out construction Risk Assessments,
however we are also regularly consulted for advice on buildability and
Value Engineering by both Employers and several International
Contractors
Sustainable
Design
The promotion of sustainable solutions within the integrated design
will be led primarily by the M&E consultant. The
civil and
structural contribution to this stage will involve the consideration of
grey water harvesting, SUDS, structural mass, exposed structure,
heating and ventilation systems, ground source
heating/cooling.
The sustainable issue has been high on project agenda for some years
now, and as such we are conversant with appropriate solutions to meet
the aspirations of the informed client, the contractor and the
team.
Design
Drivers
There are many publications in trade and product literature that
promote the sustainable, rapid, economic and other benefits of
construction solutions in concrete, steel, masonry, timber and each
clearly has some merit.
A common recurring factor is thermal mass. This can be
achieved
with insitu concrete frame and insitu concrete flat slabs, precast
concrete frame and precast slabs, steel frame and precast slabs
combined with exposed structure hence quality finishes are expected and
can be readily achieved. With the external façade a durable,
robust and attractive solution can be achieved, which integrates with
each frame solution and the glazing philosophy, in masonry, precast
concrete, cladding panels or hybrid offsite fabricated elements.
Nolan Associates have been involved with a number of projects which
have achieved BREEAM Excellent.
